Using Pillow Plate Heat Exchangers in Waste Heat Recovery Projects

Waste heat recovery sounds simple until the real stream arrives. The source may be dirty, fluctuating, chemically aggressive, or full of dust and condensable material. In those situations, a conventional exchanger can lose performance quickly because narrow channels do not tolerate buildup well. Pillow plate heat exchangers are useful here because they combine a strong welded surface with a wider internal flow path, which helps keep the recovery circuit open and usable.

Common recovery sources include warm process water, cooling loops, exhaust-side condensate, boiler blowdown, scrubbing liquid, and low-grade industrial waste streams. The recovered energy can be reused for preheating incoming water, supporting wash systems, assisting evaporation, or reducing the load on a primary boiler. The value of the exchanger is not only in thermal efficiency. It is also in the ability to run continuously without turning recovery into another maintenance headache.

For project teams, the most effective strategy is to design around actual operating conditions rather than best-case laboratory data. Flow rate, solids content, temperature swing, and cleaning interval all need to be part of the selection. A wide channel heat exchanger often gives more usable life in the field because it keeps the pressure drop under control as the stream ages. That is why waste heat recovery projects increasingly look for exchanger types that are both energy-saving and forgiving.
